The Science Behind MediHue™

The idea of using art as a study guide has legitimate roots in cognitive science, neuroscience, and educational psychology.

Dual Coding Theory
Proposed by Allan Paivio (1971), Dual Coding Theory posits that information is better remembered when it is encoded both verbally and visually.
When students color in an image (especially if it’s novel or strange), they link visual representation with verbal/semantic meaning.
This dual pathway increases the chances of recall because the brain has more retrieval routes.
Strange drawings amplify this by creating a “sticky” visual cue—our brains are more likely to store and recall something weird than something ordinary.

The Bizarreness Effect
The bizarreness effect is a psychological phenomenon where unusual or atypical information is more easily remembered than typical information.
Coloring strange or unexpected imagery tied to a concept makes that concept more memorable.

Embodied Cognition and Kinesthetic Learning
The act of physically coloring engages motor functions alongside cognitive ones.
This taps into embodied cognition—the theory that thinking is not just in the brain, but also influenced by physical action.
The motor memory from coloring helps reinforce learning through kinaesthetic encoding.

Focused Attention and Mindfulness
Coloring requires sustained attention, which aids in deeper encoding of information.
Studies have shown that activities like coloring reduce anxiety and help students focus better, which improves memory consolidation.
Not just for neurodivergent learners, coloring provides a low-distraction, high-engagement format for study.
